Poetic strings and enchanting strolls

Here, for an evening evoking the night sky, Nicolas Chalvin passes the baton to the eminent violinist and conductor Christoph Poppen. Othmar Schoeck’s wonderfully atmospheric “pastoral intermezzo” captures perfectly the mood of Gottfried Keller’s poem Sommernacht (A Summer’s Night). A masterpiece of elegance, Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik has an irresistible charm that has made it one of the most popular works in the repertoire.

The second part of the programme will be devoted to Ikarische Klage (1999) by Jörg Widmann (composer, virtuoso clarinettist and conductor), inspired by a poem by Charles Baudelaire, Les Plaintes d’un Icare. A musical interpretation of the mythical figure of Icarus, the piece centres on the medium of air, and evokes the timelessness of the poem. It uses all of the instruments’ resources, even imitating electronic sounds. The melodious Serenade, an early work by Josef Suk, brings this concert to an end.
