Coming together… The French composer François-Joseph Gossec must have been delighted to meet the young Mozart in Paris in 1778. His symphony included in this programme belongs to a set of six (Six symphonies à grand orchestre), published in 1769 as Opus 12. It employs similar instrumental forces – 2 oboes, 2 horns and strings – to Mozart’s much more famous Symphony no. 29, one of his better-known early symphonies, composed in Salzburg in 1774. Sometimes artists look to a previous generation, as Edvard Grieg did in paying tribute to the playwright Ludvig Holberg in his Opus 40, or Wolfgang Rihm in honouring the pre-Romantic writer Jakob Lenz through the folk dance known as the ländler.
